Should your student apply to an honors college? As Portland college admission counselors, we get this question from families a lot. If your student is a strong academic performer, honors programs are worth a serious look, but they're not the right fit for everyone. Let’s break down the basics about what honors programs can offer students.

• Smaller classes and more access to faculty

Honors students typically take one seminar class per semester or quarter with around 15–20 students. At larger colleges, this means more direct feedback, more opportunities to collaborate with peers, and building stronger relationships with professors, which can lead to letters of recommendation for grad school. 

• A community of motivated peers

Honors programs group students who take academics seriously, and that culture of curiosity has a compound effect over four years, affecting study habits, connections with other students, and opportunities for collaboration.

• Priority registration and housing bonuses

Many programs offer first pick of course sections, dedicated housing floors or dorms, or early access to research opportunities and internship pipelines. These advantages can shape your college experience.

• An Honors Thesis 

Honors students complete an honors thesis, a year-long independent research or creative project upon graduation. These undergraduate accomplishments stand out to graduate schools and employers.

What about the coursework? 

Many programs do lean toward humanities-style coursework, and this concern is real, but it varies by institution. At large flagship universities, honors core curricula often feature interdisciplinary seminars, " out-of-the-ordinary" elective classes, and writing-intensive coursework that is genuinely enriching but may not feel directly relevant to an engineering or nursing student. 

The University of Puget Sound Honors College, for example, requires a minor in “Consciousness, Creativity, and Meaning”, and most honors electives are humanities-based.  The University of Oregon Clark Honors College requires students to take interdisciplinary classes both within the honors college and in the general UO course offerings. Schools like Purdue and Georgia Tech offer honors tracks specifically designed for STEM majors. 

The thesis requirements for Honors Colleges fit some majors better than others. In the humanities, a senior thesis is a natural capstone. In computer science, nursing, or engineering, an independent research project is achievable, but will require more initiative. 

The Bottom Line: Honors programs deliver real value: smaller classes, motivated peers, faculty relationships, and an honors thesis.
